 Cupping therapy, an ancient practice with roots in traditional Chinese medicine, has been utilized for centuries to promote healing and alleviate various ailments. One area where cupping has shown promising results is in respiratory health, particularly in managing conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and clearing phlegm. In this blog post, we'll explore the history of cupping, its effects on the lungs, and provide a brief overview of how to perform cupping using modern suction cups. We'll also cover important contraindications to ensure safe practice.


The History of Cupping


Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egypt, China, and the Middle East. The Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest medical texts in the world, mentions cupping as early as 1550 B.C. In traditional Chinese medicine, cupping was believed to stimulate the flow of Qi (life force) and blood, remove stagnation, and expel toxins from the body. Over time, cupping techniques evolved, and today, it is widely practiced in both traditional and modern forms.


Effects of Cupping on the Lungs


Clearing Phlegm
- Cupping can help break up and expel phlegm from the respiratory tract. The suction created by the cups draws blood flow to the area, which can reduce inflammation and loosen mucus, making it easier to expel. This is particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from bronchitis or chronic congestion.


Asthma Relief - For asthma sufferers, cupping can help by promoting relaxation and reducing muscle tightness around the chest. This can lead to easier breathing and fewer asthma attacks. The increased blood flow to the respiratory muscles can also enhance their function, providing symptomatic relief.


Managing COPD - Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition that makes it difficult to breathe. Cupping can help manage COPD symptoms by improving lung function and reducing inflammation. By enhancing blood circulation, cupping can aid in delivering more oxygen to the tissues, which is crucial for individuals with COPD.


How to Perform Cupping Using Suction Cups:


Materials Needed:

- Silicone or plastic suction cups

- Massage oil or lotion

- Clean towels


Steps to Cupping:

1. Preparation: Ensure the area to be cupped is clean and dry. Apply a small amount of massage oil or lotion to help the cups glide smoothly.

2. Applying the Cups: Squeeze the suction cup to create a vacuum and place it on the skin. Common areas for respiratory issues include the upper back and chest.

3. Adjusting Suction: You can adjust the suction by squeezing the cup more or less before placing it on the skin. The skin should rise slightly into the cup without causing pain.

4. Duration: Leave the cups in place for 5-10 minutes. For a more dynamic approach, you can gently glide the cups over the skin to provide a massage effect.

5. Removal: To remove the cups, gently press the skin near the edge of the cup to release the suction.


While cupping is generally safe, there are several contraindications to keep in mind:

- Open wounds or skin infection: Avoid cupping over areas with cuts, sores, or infections to prevent further irritation or spread of infection.

- Blood clotting disorders: Individuals with conditions like hemophilia or those on blood-thinning medications should avoid cupping due to the risk of bruising or bleeding.

- Pregnancy: Avoid cupping on the abdomen or lower back during pregnancy.

- Severe skin conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can be aggravated by cupping.

- Fever or acute illness: If you have a fever or are experiencing an acute illness, it's best to postpone cupping until you are well.


Cupping therapy is a time-honored practice with significant benefits for respiratory health. Whether you're dealing with asthma, COPD, or chronic phlegm, cupping can provide relief by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting relaxation. By using modern suction cups, you can safely and effectively perform cupping at home. However, always be mindful of contraindications and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
